Year 5 Home Learning Work for Wednesday 1st July

Maths

Use the link below to play Angle Alien Attack. This will give you further practice of reading a protractor accurately.

Watch the video for today's lesson: Calculate angles on a straight line.

Complete as much of today's worksheet (below) as you can.

(Answers are at the bottom of this page.)

English

Practise your spellings for this week.

Use the link below to watch a Youtube video about the creation of braille - a writing system for those who are blind.

Here is the Braille alphabet - it uses a series of up to 6 raised dots in an oblong formation.

Use the alphabet to write a simple message. Challenge someone at home to read your message using the alphabet. Can they write something for you to read?

Now consider how much harder it would be if you had to feel the dots, rather than look at them!

Science - Pin Drop Investigation

You will need some help with this investigation and a bit of quiet. You will be attempting to answer the question: How good is our hearing?

First, you will need these:

  • a pin (a small one used for sewing is best)
  • a chair
  • a hard floor surface (the kitchen or hallway for example)
  • a measuring tape
  • paper and pencil to record results

One person sits on the chair facing away. The other person lays out the measuring tape on the floor and moves back 50cm, then drops the pin from an agreed height. The person sitting on the chair must raise their hand when they hear the pin drop. If the hand goes up at the right time, we must assume they heard the pin drop, didn't just guess! Move 50cm further back and repeat. Stop when the person sitting on the chair can no longer hear the pin and does not put their hand up at the right time. Record the distance measured.

Who in your family has the best hearing?
