Modern Foreign Languages

‘You live a new life for every language you speak. If you only know one language, you only live once.’

Czech proverb

At Christ Church, we believe that learning another language is a crucial part of the curriculum which allows children to build self-confidence as well as developing their communication skills. Learning another language gives children the valuable opportunity to develop positive attitudes to and respect for languages and cultures other than their own. We aim to foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of both the world around them and their own language. Our children will be able to acquire and develop language skills, using what they have learned in a range of contexts with increasing competence and confidence.

Our vision for MFL at Christ Church is to encourage children to be inquisitive about the world. By the time children leave our school, they will have developed basic language skills, knowledge and vocabulary for global communication.

The National Curriculum for Languages

All Key Stage 2 children learn French.  The focus is on conversational French with children participating in a variety of activities including singing, stories and games.

The national curriculum for languages aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
  • speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
  • can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
  • discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied
