  • Football Match v Holy Trinity

Tue 31 Oct 2017 Mr Searle

On Tuesday 31st October, the school football team travelled to Holy Trinity in the centre of town for their latest league match. There were two surprises for the players on arrival. Firstly, Miss Kinane was in charge of the Holy Trinity team! Secondly, the pitch was very very small - not much bigger than an average back garden!

Once the match got started it became apparent very soon that the size of the pitch was not going to help the Christ Church passing game. With sixteen players crammed onto the playing area, there was little time or space for anyone on the ball, so tactics had to change. This was particularly true in the penalty areas, where Reuben Blake in goal had to have his wits about him to cope with the melee which followed any throw-in or corner. He performed admirably in the first half and Christ Church soon took the lead with a strong shot from Leo Hunt, playing his first game for the school. This was soon followed by a second goal from Laurie Farrar, so at half-time we were 2-0 up and looking to push on in the second half.

Holy Trinity came out very strongly after the break and much of the action was around the Christ Church goal mouth. The score became 2-1 when a wonderful strike from the halfway line flew into the top corner. This gave Holy Trinity added hope and their attack was relentless. A slightly dubious penalty decision then resulted in the scores level at 2-2 with just a matter of minutes left to play. Unfortunately, luck was on the side of Holy Trinity on this occasion and they managed to squirm a rebounded shot into the goal for a final score of 3-2.

Despite losing and feeling a little aggrieved that the game was 'rather rough' at times, the Christ Church players should feel proud of their performance, particularly having to adjust to playing on such a handkerchief-sized pitch.

On Thursday 12th October, the school football team played their second game of the season. It was against St John's Primary School and took place at Alstone Croft.

After the heavy defeat in their first game, the players were determined to concentrate from the start and not give away any early goals. The Christ Church defence proved much stronger in this game and the game flowed from one end of the pitch to the other in an exciting frenzy of goal-mouth chances. St John's were awarded a penalty late in the first half, which was spectacularly saved by goalie, Reuben Blake. This meant the match was all square 0-0 at half time.

With a couple of substitutions at half time, Christ Church came out even stronger at the start of the second half and Luca Cavanagh came close to scoring on a number of occasions and Laurie Farrar made some exciting runs down the wing. Nevertheless the ball would not go in the net and at full time the score remained 0-0.

This was a very big improvement on the performance in the first match, so that bodes well for our next couple of games after half term.

  • First Football Match of the Season

Wed 04 Oct 2017 Mr Searle

On Wednesday 4th October the school football team played their first match. We had to travel away to Gretton, quite a journey at the end of a school day!

The players for this match were all from Year 6 and were very excited to be representing the school, most for the first time.

The pitch turned out to be very small, but with big goals - the complete opposite of our home pitch at Alstone Croft. The team started nervously and let in some quick goals, but this shocked them into working hard to keep possession of the ball and towards the end of the half they were playing better. Even so, they were 4-0 down at half-time.

Gretton started the second half well and again scored goals in quick succession, but Christ Church fought back valiantly and Luca Cavanagh scored our only goal of the game. The final score was 8-1 to Gretton.

Player of the match was Edward Smart.
